After the anticipated wait, Rihanna's new album titled "Anti" finally dropped on January 28th. As soon as it became available on iTunes, I bought it and let me tell you; I have officially become addicted. Well worth the wait. Rihanna is a music artist that combines reggae, hip-hop and R&B with a touch of what I consider to be magic. The "Anti" album expresses soul and dancehall, which is a genre of Jamaican music with an interpretation of reggae.
Music has been apart of my life since the day I was born. My fathers side of the family were musicians from a young age up until a few years ago. Music is in my soul and runs through my blood. For me, music isn't just a sound. It's a feeling. An expression of emotion. A form of beauty. It has meaning. I connect to music differently than others. I know this because when I talk about music, the response in return is usually on the surface. For example, I've asked friends over the years, "why do you love this particular song?". The response, "because I love him/her as an artist", "because I can dance to the beat", or my favorite, "because I'm a fan of his/her music". Really? That's why you loved a song and bought the album? I get it; you're a fan but WHY? If someone were to ask me why I love a specific song, I most likely would give almost too big of an answer. My response might sound something like, "I love this song because I relate to the lyrics. The lyrics voice exactly how I feel. The way the artist sings the song gives me goosebumps, and I can feel and understand what he/she are expressing. I feel the emotion. Sometimes I find myself tearing up over how beautiful the song sounds and feels. The beat brings the rhythm, and the lyrics bring the power. Music is an artform. An artform that has and will always be my escape from the world.
Dark yet romantic, Rihanna expresses self-assurance through her new "Anti" album that is anything but boring. I find the album to be rich and inspiring. Her breathtakingly unique voice captivated me from the very first track. To be honest, I don't have one favorite song from the album; I love them all. They're all different, and I love each one for various reasons. Whether you're a fan of Rihanna or not, I highly recommend listing to the album. Give it a listen! Who knows, maybe it'll inspire you. Personally, I feel that Rihanna killed this album like the badass rockstar that she is.
